Used mainly as a double de-oxidiser in steel making and low carbon grades of steel due to the low carbon content of the alloy, nominally C 1.5%-2.0%.
It is the preferred method of introducing manganese into steel where the silicon is not deleterious and has the extra benefit of introducing lower levels of phosphorus and aluminium to the melt compared with making individual additions of ferro silicon and ferro manganese.
