Molybdenum primarily increases the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. Molybdenum containing stainless steels are thus used in applications that are more corrosive, such as chemical processing plants and in marine applications.
Molybdenum stainless steels are used in heat exchangers and other elevated temperature equipment such as automotive exhaust systems, since Molybdenum increases the elevated temperature strength of stainless steel.
Molybdenum finds its application in alloy steels and cast irons to improve hardenability, reduce temper embrittlement, increase elevated temperature strength, and improve weldability especially in High Strength Low Alloy Steel. End use of molybdenum contained alloy steels and cast irons are, Automotive, shipbuilding, aircraft, aerospace, drilling, mining, steam boilers, turbines, electricity generators, heat exchangers, Chemical & Petrochemical processing etc.
